Skills Summit

ACE Skills Summit 2018: Future-proofing consultancy and engineering

The Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE) is launching a new event to celebrate the skills and attributes of engineers and technicians in our sector. The inaugural ACE Skills Summit: Future-proofing consultancy and engineering, will take place at the Marriott Grosvenor Square, London on 6 June 2018 and focus on addressing the big questions. How do we attract and retain the next generation? How do we fill the skills gap? How will we deal with the loss of knowledge as more experienced generations retire?

Key speakers from Ramboll, Engineering UK and the Royal Academy of Engineering will explore the major issues around skills in the morning, while the afternoon is split into three separate work-streams for emerging leaders, apprentices and HR professionals. The afternoon includes practical sessions dedicated to improving commercial and business skills, as well as knowledge of the wider industry.

Taking place during the Year of Engineering, the summit will explore ongoing concerns around the skills gap in our industry in the UK. Estimates project that there will be a demand for 265,000 skilled employees in our sector, including 186,000 engineers until 2024. This situation is further exacerbated by the ongoing uncertainty around Brexit and its potential impact on the free movement of Europeans which has traditionally helped to meet this demand.

Meanwhile, our industry, like many others, needs to adapt if it wishes to attract, but most importantly retain, millennials who will soon make up 50% of the global workforce. We need to develop new ways of working to appeal to a generation of highly-educated, digitally-native, socially-conscious and confident self-starters.

ACE has collaborated with a range of stakeholders for the input into the summit's agenda, including ACE’s Progress Network and HR Taskforce, the Technician Apprenticeship Consortium and a number of CEOs and HR professionals who have helped us to devise an engaging but most importantly informative agenda to explore the issues in-depth.

Who should attend?

The ACE Skills Summit: Future-proofing consultancy and engineering, is for:

  • CEOs who want to gain insight on the major skills issues facing their industry;
  • HR professionals who would like to learn more about the innovative ways of recruiting and retaining the next generation; and
  • Engineers, technicians or apprentices who want to improve their business and commercial awareness, knowledge and leadership skills.

This summit provides a unique opportunity for the sector to come together to address the skills issues facing our industry. Together, we can identify solutions to future-proof consultancy and engineering and ensure it remains both an attractive career choice and an industry which continues to deliver to its fullest potential.

Reverse mentoring

ACE will also reveal the results of its Reverse Mentoring project at the summit and share its pilot report. Reverse Mentoring is where senior leaders and senior executives (mentees) learn about current trends and behaviours from junior staff (mentors) who in return gain valuable insight into the knowledge and experience of senior executives. Our project is the first cross-company pilot in the infrastructure industry and attendees will be able to learn from the experiences of the 11 pairings at Arcadis, BWB, Mott MacDonald, Max Fordham, Peter Brett, Tony Gee and WSP. All delegates will receive a complimentary copy of the report which will not only discuss the pilot, but produce recommendations for any company interested in launching their own reverse mentoring scheme.

Consultancy and Engineering Awards

In the evening of Wednesday 6 June, the Consultancy and Engineering Awards, which celebrate success and best practice across the global engineering and consultancy community, take place at the Marriott Grosvenor Square, London. Attendees of the Skills Summit are able to book places for both events at a reduced rate. Further information on the awards can be found at the Consultancy and Engineering Awards.
